Externally funded project

On-farm self-monitoring of animal welfare: feasibility, setting of an assessment framework and technical electronic implementation ("self-monitoring of animal welfare") (EiKoTiGer)

Project Details
Project duration: 11/201603/2021

The aim of the project is to test and further develop selected animal welfare indicators for self-monitoring

on-farm. Indicators should be feasible and reliable for the welfare monitoring of cattle, pigs and poultry. In

addition, different options of farmers' training concerning the application of the monitoring tool will be

tested and evaluated. An assessment framework regarding the welfare outcomes (target and threshold values, benchmarking) will be developed, discussed with stakeholders, and then be integrated in a user-friendly software-based monitoring tool. This tool shall help farmers to monitor systematically and regularly the welfare of their animals, to detect possible welfare problems and to monitor improvements. It is a cooperative project together with Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft (KTBL, coordinator), Thünen-Institut, Trenthorst (for the application in cattle) and Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Celle (for pigs). The application in poultry is the task of the University of Kassel.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) based on a decision of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany via the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) under the Innovation Scheme.

in corporation with: Schultheiß, U. Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft, Brinkmann, J., Cimer, K. und March, S. Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut, Schrader, L. and Schubbert, A. Friedrich Loeffler Institut.
